Controller Support
Play Aetheria with an Xbox, PlayStation or other standard gamepad: setup, the full button layout and tips.
Aetheria supports game controllers in the browser. Plug in an Xbox, PlayStation or other standard controller, log in, and play with sticks and buttons in the close camera: left stick to move, right stick to look, and buttons to fight, loot and use your inventory.
What you need
- A controller your browser recognises as a standard gamepad: Xbox One and Series controllers, PlayStation DualShock 4 and DualSense, and most other modern controllers.
- An up-to-date browser. Chrome and Edge work best with controllers; Firefox and Safari also support them.
- Connect it with a cable or Bluetooth, the same way you would for any PC game.
Getting started
- Connect your controller, then open play.aetheriaps.com and log in.
- Press any button or move a stick. Browsers only report a controller after you press something on it.
- Your first input switches on the close camera and the game prints a short reminder of the buttons in your chat box.
- Press the backquote key ` on your keyboard to go back to the classic view. Touching the controller again switches the close camera back on.
Button layout
Xbox names first, PlayStation in brackets:
| Left stick | Move your character |
|---|---|
| Left stick click (L3) | Toggle running on and off |
| Right stick | Look around. Small movements aim finely; pushing all the way turns quickly. |
| A (✕) or X (□) | Interact with what the crosshair is on: attack, talk, pick up, open |
| RT (R2) | Use / interact (the same as A) |
| LT (L2), hold | Open the options menu for what you are aiming at. While a menu is open, LT backs out of it. |
| D-pad | Move the selection in menus, your inventory and interfaces. Hold to keep moving. |
| Y (△) | Jump to your inventory and back to movement |
| B (○) | Back: close a menu, leave the inventory, then close an open interface |
| RB (R1) | Use your special attack. In the inventory or an interface: next panel. |
| LB (L1) | In the inventory or an interface: previous panel |
Common actions
| To... | Do this |
|---|---|
| Attack a monster | Aim the right stick at it and press A |
| Eat food or drink a potion | Y to open the inventory, D-pad to the item, A to eat or drink, Y to get back to moving |
| Drop or use an item on something | Select it in the inventory and hold LT for all of its options, then the D-pad and A |
| Pick up loot | Aim at it and press A, or hold LT to choose which item |
| Special attack | RB while moving or fighting |
| Bank, shop or talk | Aim at the banker or NPC and press A; use the D-pad inside the interface and B to close it |
| Choose a dialogue option | D-pad up and down, then A |
Rumble
Controllers with vibration rumble when you are hit: the harder the hit, the stronger the rumble. Poison and venom give a softer pulse. Rumble works in browsers that support controller vibration, such as Chrome and Edge.
Mixing controller, keyboard and mouse
The controller works on top of the keyboard and mouse, so you can use all three. Chat, prayers, spells and settings are easiest with the keyboard and mouse: press Alt to free the cursor, click what you need, and pick the controller back up. Typing a message works as in WASD mode.
Troubleshooting
- Nothing happens: make sure you are logged in, then press a button. The browser has to see an input first. Try another USB port or re-pair Bluetooth, and check that the controller works on a gamepad test site.
- Buttons do the wrong things: your browser may not see it as a standard gamepad. Xbox-compatible (XInput) mode, or Steam's controller settings turned off, usually fixes this.
- The character drifts: a worn stick can drift. The game ignores small stick movements, but a badly drifting stick may still move you.
- No rumble: not every browser supports controller vibration; try Chrome or Edge.
- On a phone or tablet: connect the controller over Bluetooth first. Support depends on your phone's browser.
