Voice Chat

Proximity voice chat: how to turn it on, how far voices carry, volume, the speaking icon and privacy.

Aetheria has proximity voice chat built into the browser client. You hear the players near you, louder the closer they are, and they can hear you if you turn your microphone on. Nothing to install and no separate voice app.

The Voice button

Voice chat replaces the Report button at the bottom right of the chat box with a Voice button. Click it to cycle through three modes:

ModeButton showsWhat happens
Listen (default)ListenYou hear nearby players who are talking. Your microphone stays off.
OnOnYou hear nearby players, and they hear you. Your browser asks for microphone permission the first time.
OffOffVoice chat is off: you hear no one and no one hears you.

While the browser is asking for your microphone, the button shows Wait. Click again from Off to go back to Listen.

Who can hear you

  • Players within 15 tiles of you, on the same floor.
  • Volume falls off with distance: full volume right next to you, fading to silence at 15 tiles.
  • Instances and private areas are separate: players in a raid, a Divine Trial or another instance only hear the people inside it with them.
  • Walk away and the voice fades; walk back and you hear each other again.

Who is talking

A speaker icon appears above the head of anyone who is talking, including you, so you can always see who is speaking.

Volume

Voice has its own volume, separate from game sounds and music. Open the Configuration button in the client toolbar, find Voice Chat, and set Voice volume (0 to 100%).

To turn voice chat off completely, switch the Voice Chat plugin off there: the chat box gets its Report button back.

Microphone permission

  • The first time you choose On, your browser asks to use your microphone. Choose Allow.
  • Blocked it by accident? Click the padlock or site settings icon next to the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and reload the game.
  • Your microphone is only used while the button says On. Switch to Listen or Off to stop it.
  • If your browser blocks sound until you interact with the page, click or press any key in the game.

Privacy and etiquette

  • Voice is sent directly between players' browsers (peer to peer) and only to players close enough to hear you.
  • Use Listen if you want to hear others without speaking, and Off if you want quiet.
  • Be kind: the rules of the game apply to voice chat too.

Troubleshooting

  • I cannot hear anyone: make sure the button says Listen or On, the other player has their microphone On and is within 15 tiles on your floor, and your Voice volume is not at 0.
  • No one can hear me: set the button to On, allow the microphone in your browser, and check your system's input device.
  • The Report button is still there: the Voice Chat plugin is switched off in Configuration, or your browser does not support voice.
  • Strict networks (some school or work networks) can block direct connections between players.
